Onboarding a Scurry

A Scurry is the weekly group for children ages 4 and 5 in the Scouting America Chipmunks pilot. It is its own unit type in MySummitKeep, separate from a pack. This page covers setting one up.

  1. Start unit setup and choose Scurry as the unit type.
  2. Enter the Scurry’s name and your council.
  3. Finish setup. You become the Scurry Coordinator, the parent who leads the Scurry.

A Scurry is free. It runs on Basecamp features, with no trial, no payment details and no upgrade to buy.

The coordinator should complete Safe Youth Training (SYT). It is a warning, not a block. You can set up and start right away. Until an SYT date is recorded, you see a banner, and a Chipmunk Ranger’s totals show SYT missing.

A Scurry can be linked to one pack as its Lion feeder, the pack the children are likely to join next.

  1. The coordinator requests the link and picks a pack.
  2. The pack’s Key 3 accepts the request.

Both units must be in the same council. A Scurry has at most one active link. The pack sees only a count of children heading its way, never names.

  • No ranks, badges or advancement. Recognition is a sticker book.
  • No dens, patrols or leadership council.
  • Parents attend every meeting and take turns with small jobs such as snack, setup and story reader.
  • Two-deep leadership warnings are off for Scurry events. Events show “Parents or guardians stay with their child” instead.
  • Scurry children are not counted in youth statistics or official reports.
  • Children must be at least 4. A younger birth date is refused, and 6 or older shows a warning.

When a child is in kindergarten this fall, or turns 5 by September 1, the coordinator and the parent are told the child is ready for Lions. The parent can ask to join the linked pack, and the pack approves the request the usual way. The Scurry seat ends at the end of the program year.

Scurry records are archived and minimized two years after a child’s last Scurry year.
