Linking a Scurry to a Pack
Scouting America Chipmunks is a pilot program for ages 4 and 5. A Scurry is its own unit and meets separately from a pack. When the children are old enough, many families move up to a Lion group in a pack. A pack link connects the two units on MySummitKeep so that move is one tap for the family.
What the link shares, and what it does not
Section titled “What the link shares, and what it does not”A link shares only the two unit names and a status. The pack’s leaders also see one number: how many children in the Scurry are expected to move up this fall. They never see a child’s name, a parent’s name, a household or a date of birth. Families decide for themselves whether to ask the pack to take them.
Ask a pack to link (Scurry Coordinator)
Section titled “Ask a pack to link (Scurry Coordinator)”- Open Settings → Unit Profile in your Scurry.
- Find the Lion feeder pack card.
- Choose a pack from your council and select Ask this pack to link.
The pack’s Key 3 leaders are told. Until they answer, the card reads Waiting for the pack to answer. You can select Withdraw request at any time, and you can ask a different pack after a decline.
Answer a request (pack Key 3)
Section titled “Answer a request (pack Key 3)”When a Scurry asks your pack, the Linked Scurries card appears in Settings → Unit Profile.
- Select Accept to make the Scurry’s Lion feeder your pack. A link becomes active only after you accept.
- Select Decline to turn the request down. The Scurry’s Coordinator is told.
Only a Key 3 leader of the pack (or an administrator of the unit) can answer. If the Scurry is in a different council than your pack, the link cannot be accepted.
After the link is active
Section titled “After the link is active”- The pack’s card shows a count such as 2 children are expected to move up this fall. It is a number only.
- Each week, MySummitKeep checks which children are in kindergarten this fall or turn 5 by September 1. It tells their parents how to ask the pack to take them, tells the Scurry Coordinator how many are ready, and tells the pack’s Key 3 the same count.
- Parents ask to join from the Move Up to Lions page. The pack’s leaders see an ordinary join request from the parent and answer it as they answer any other. See Moving Up to Lions.
Ending a link
Section titled “Ending a link”Either side can select End link on the card. The other side is told. Ending a link does not change anyone’s membership.
When the Scurry year ends
Section titled “When the Scurry year ends”The program year ends on August 31. From September 1, a child who was ready to move up no longer has a Scurry seat, so the Scurry roster reflects the new year. Children who are still 4 stay for a second Scurry year.
